A Broken Chest Re-Do
Good morning and Brrrrr it's cold here in Michigan again. It was so nice for 2 days and it was like Spring around here but now it's in the 20's and a wind chill of 10 degrees. It's Michigan, you never know what going to come our way. Love it. Well, I have a remake that took a little bit of time because I didn't know what to do. We had this old chest that was really beat up and the drawers were a mess. We took out the good drawers and made some shelves out of them. They turned out really fun and I will show you at a later date, but for now it's all about the chest. Here is the before picture:
As you can see it looked a little rough. There was no bottom and no dividers between the drawers. So I asked my husband if he could make some shelves because I was going to use this for an organization piece. I have a craft/sewing room that I absolutely love. can I can do my projects there and if I have to leave I can shut the door til a later date when I can come back and project again. So here is the next step:
After the separations were in, I thought that some trim would add to the piece. So they were cut and added on, which actually hides the added wood shelves My husband added another little shelf where a little drawer once was. I have pink and green in my sewing room, so I painted the piece green and the inside a raspberry color. Antiqued the green with the pink and rubbed pink along the edges. I filled the drawer spaces with an industrial look with some metal bins. I weaved some material along the edges of some of the baskets. I had an old metal bicycle basket and I added it to the outside to hold a little more stuff. I also weaved some material around that basket to be able to hold smaller stuff there.
I had an old metal bicycle basket that I thought was really cool. We added it to the outside of the cabinet and I also weaved some material to that basket to be able to hold some smaller items.
It looks a little rustic but still a little feminine. A little industrial, too..I think adding the material and some bows added the feminine look, along with the pink..
Love the original casters on the bottom of the chest. It makes it a little easier to move the piece around when it comes time to clean and straighten up.
The finished look.
So how do you like the look? Until next time, Dianne........

China Cabinet Completed
Hey guys! How is your Tuesday morning going? It's raining like crazy here in Michigan....you never know what the weather around these parts is going to be:)!! Gotta love Michigan!! I found this FAB china cabinet this fall at a garage sale. I was absolutely over the moon in love with it and just knew I had to have it. It was in great shape and still had the glass intact. I scooped it up for a great price. It did sit for awhile in my garage as I wasn't sure what color I wanted to paint it.
I decided to paint it white and then antique it with gray. First of all I gave it a good cleaning and then a coat of primer. I love using Kilz primer....as I usually never sand the piece before I begin painting it. The Kilz primer gives it a good layer for the paint to grip onto. I used the same paint/primer in one from my local Benjamin Moore paint store. It goes on like butter and the finish is great. I used a gray latex paint mixed with a glaze product to antique the cabinet. Here it is after the whole process....I should really put in in my "booth space" for Shabby Gals....but I think it's going to stay awhile in my house and I will enjoy it for a bit. Here are a few after pictures.....
Have a great day!!!

Updated Bulletin Board
Hi everyone!! Hope this post finds you well and enjoying your Sunday!! We've had a fun weekend. My husband and I played broom hockey last night, which was an absolute riot! We had a great time and it was a beautiful night to be outside getting some much needed exercise.....and some much needed LAUGHS!!
I found a few of these bulletin boards this past summer at local garage sale. I decided that I would try and spruce it up a bit.
I sprayed the frame red and then glazed it with black paint. I then added a piece of material to the front of it and secured it with glue. I created a few fun thumbtacks by adding scrabble pieces to the front of a pushpin.
Hope you have a wonderful day!!!

A Little More Burlap
Good evening, fellow bloggers. It's Thursday and I have been busy doing some sewing since it is so very cold in snowy Michigan. I have been wanting to update the cushions on my kitchen chairs but wasn't quite sure how I wanted to do them. My kitchen has soft orange walls with cream cupboards and trim. I had a stripe material that held up well, but I wanted a change. Here is the before picture:
As you can see I had a stripe material on them but wanted a more rustic farm feeling to the cushion. I had found some burlap bags at a flea market in Ohio in the spring that I really liked. The colors were just right for my kitchen, but they weren't big enough to make the whole cushion. So I cut out the design and centered it some more burlap bags and sewed it on. I had used the previous pattern to make the new cushion. I used some vintage material on the back side of the cushion and used the same material for the ties. I was pleased with the final results.
So, what do you think? I think they look more rustic and f army looking. Better or worse? Until next time, Dianne.......

Not just an old door
Brr!!! It is definitely Winter around these areas!! I think today is a few degrees warmer than yesterday but it is so cold. It's a good day to stay inside and get some projects done. This project I am going to share with you didn't take much talent on my part, actually zero talent because I didn't have to do anything with it except assemble it. It is so cool though I just had to share.
I think many of my posts have been on salvaged pieces from homes or other pieces of furniture. I just LOVE things that are old and can be re-purposed into something unique. I found this door below at a garage sale. It was in a big box and I didn't even know what it was going to turn out looking like. All I really saw was the stained glass and I had to have it. I figured even if there weren't all the pieces in the box I could at least use the stain glass for something. Anyhow I took it all out, as you can see in the pictures below there weren't many pieces, and I had my husband help me glue and clamp it all together. When it was completed I put something to hang it up with on the back and found the perfect spot on the wall. I could even re-use it on a cupboard or something but I adored the way it looks hanging as a decoration, it's so pretty. If I do say so myself I think I found a real treasure. :) I might eventually add some old picture frames or maybe a quote inside the lower part of the door but for now it is hanging happily in my living room. Thanks for stopping by and visiting us!!! Have a great day!

A Little Shabby
Hi everyone. I'm doing a little extra blogging this week. I have been a little busy with some sewing projects to push the January blahs away. It's been cold and windy this week, so it's been nice to be up in my sewing room all nice and warm. Anyways, here is my little project. I have this cute little antique desk in my kitchen that holds all the bills and important stuff. It sits in a little corner of the kitchen. I have an old chair that did have a cushion on it but after a while it got a little stained and well used. Here is the before picture:
I had found some burlap bags at a flea market in the spring and one bag had a cute checkerboard design on it. I decided that I wanted to use that bag so I traced my old cushion on some paper and used that for my pattern. I wanted to dress it up just a little so I had some cream fringe that I sewed along the edges. I used burlap for the bottom of the pad and added some ties to the back of the cushion to be able to attach to my little chair. The fringe adds just a little bit of fancy with the shabby look of the burlap.
So what do you think? Until next time, Dianne.........

Fire Engine Red
Hello and happy Sunday! Hope you had a restful weekend. We enjoyed a nice weekend and it's extended a bit with my hubby off work tomorrow. We celebrated my niece's first birthday this past Friday evening......it's always fun to see how they will react to their cake! She loved it and wasn't too happy when her parents took it away. It's crazy how fast a year goes....seems like my sister just had her. We also were lucky enough to sneak away without our son on Saturday evening and enjoy dinner at a local Mediterranean restaurant with a few good friends. It was a good weekend.....
I found these hooks at a garage sale this past summer. I loved the size of the hooks so I scooped them up. The best part is that they are quite light. In my humble opinion, I thought they would be more appealing in a more electric color.....so I gave them a coat of "Fire Engine" red. I then glazed them with black paint to give them a bit more depth.
I hope you enjoyed your visit today and come back again soon!!!
Make it a great day!

From Sweater to Bag
Good evening fellow bloggers. It's Thursday and I'm just getting around to blogging. The day was busy and went by so fast but I have a fun project to tell you about and I forgot to take the before picture. A friend came to me and asked to make a bag out of a boiled wool sweater that she had picked up at a local Salvation Army store. She loved the handwork on the front of the sweater. She is not a knitter and loves the felted bags one can knit, so she thought that buying this sweater and making it into a bag would be the next best thing. She also picked up two canvas belts with the double rings on the end of the belt. She asked me if I could use them as the handles on the bag. I really liked the idea and I told her that I would figure out something for her. So this is what I did and how it came out:
It took a little bit of time to come up with this bag. I first deconstructed the sweater, took off the sleeves, the back of the sweater and the front. I overlapped the two fronts and stitched down the front. I wasn't worried about unraveling issues because boiled wool will not fray. The front of the bag was 16" wide when finished. So I had a piece that was 17" wide with 1/2" for seam allowances. The length of the bag was 19" long. I had the front piece pieced together and I had used the back of the sweater for the back of the bag. I had taken the sleeves and had cut as many 5 1/2" wide pieces as I could. I than pieced them together to make one long strip that was 5 1/2" wide. I used this piece as the side of the bag and stitched the front and the back to this long strip. I evened out this strip with the top of the bag. I didn't discard the decorative welt that was along the edges of the sweater and sleeves, so I added it to the top of bag for a finished edge. I also added the sweater pocket to the front of the bag for added storage, maybe a cell phone, keys,etc.....
When I was finished sewing the bag together I took the canvas belts and sewed them to the front and back of the bag. I left the D rings on the belt on because she thought she could attach keys to the front of the bag instead of searching deep inside the bag. The belts were slightly different in color but they added to the look of the bag with all the different colors on the front. The finished bag measurements were: 19" long, 16" wide and the sides were 4 1/2" wide.
My friend was really pleased with this bag and loves using it. I see it on her shoulder every day at work. I was pleased with the end results and nothing like keeping a friend happy. What do you think? Until next time Dianne......

Chicken Wire Lampshade
It's that time of the week again where I get to share with you something special that I have been working on. I am really excited to share this project with you. I LOVE how it looks in my house and am in the process of completing another one.
I can't take the credit for this fabulous idea because I actually saw it in a little store a while back. For some reason certain ideas stick in your head...maybe because it was such an awesome idea!! Anyhow I have all these lampshades floating around my house and I always see blogs and ideas on pinterest to cover them with fabric, paper, or stencil on them. Now I have tried a few different ways and nothing has ever turned out for me, I don't know if it because I don't like the look of it or I don't know how to do it correctly, either way I had to figure something else out. So I took some chicken wire, as I saw at that adorable little store, and took the original fabric and lining off of the shade. I worked in sections to make it more manageable. If any of you have worked with chicken wire it pokes, scratches and cuts you so the smaller the pieces the easier it is to work with. As far as a tutorial goes to explain the process you just have to wrap the wires around the frame and use pliers to make sure they are secure with no loose ends to cut you. Also just as a little final touch I added a flower clip that I had originally purchased to make for my daughters hair. As you can see it never made it that far, but i just adore how it adds a little femininity to the shade.
I placed the chicken wire shade on an antique lamp that I found a few years ago...just sitting in my basement waiting for it's time to shine. I just didn't know what kind of lampshade to put on it because I had bought it without one and for some reason I am really particular about that. I placed this finished product on it and found a perfect place in the house for it!! Hope the rest of the week treats you all well.
Here is how the lampshade started off...pretty rough looking if you ask me.

A Little Spray Paint Update
Good morning!! I hope you all had a great weekend! They always go by so fast....We had an enjoyable and relaxing weekend over here. I think it almost reached 60 degrees on Saturday here in Michigan! It was BEAUTIFUL!!!
I found this little milk jar vase at a rummage sale awhile back and decided to try and give it a new look.
I put a few coats of white spray paint on it. I pulled out my cricut machine and created a number three out of contact paper and then adhered it to the vase. It looks a bit "springish" so it won't be displayed on my mantle for a few more months. Do you like it better before or after?
Make it a wonderful week!!!

Thrift Store Frame Updated Into a Chalkboard
Hey there! It's Friday!!! I LOVE Friday nights....I always have. We pretty much have no plans for tomorrow during the day....I love wide open Saturdays with nothing on the agenda!
I found this boring oak frame at a thrift shop just waiting for me to scoop it up and give it a face lift...:)!
I found this boring oak frame at a thrift shop just waiting for me to scoop it up and give it a face lift...:)!
I put a coat of primer and then a few coats of a "minty" blue/green latex paint on it....not sure of the exact color as it was found on the "oops" paint shelf at my local Home Depot. The picture doesn't portray the color accurately...it really is a pretty and soft color. I painted the plastic part of the frame with chalkboard paint. Lastly, I also chose to distress the frame. Here she is now...I think looking much better.
Have a fab Friday night!!

The Corner Shelf
Good Evening. It's Thursday and I have a fun little project to share with you. I found this cute little corner shelf at a garage sale and I think I paid only a couple of dollars for it. I really liked all the scrolls and curves that were incorporated in it but I didn't really like the black color. So here is the before picture with a couple of cans of spray paint:
I really debated about the color and decided not to use the two cans that were on top of the shelf. I decided to go with a cheery red spray paint. I really liked my daughter's use of red on her bakers shelf that she had painted a few months ago, so I copied her idea and I really liked the way it came out. I am always surprised on how a change of paint can change a piece of furniture and make it look so different. Here is the after picture:
So what do you think? Until next time, Dianne........

A Sentimental Gift
Good morning!! I cannot believe that it is already January 9!! It seems as if the holidays came and went so fast. I hope that everyone is having a great start to the year.
For Christmas my sister-in-law and I had exchanged names and we decided on making gifts. It's a tradition that my sisters, mom and I usually do each year but this year we decided to buy each other something. So I was asking my sister-in-law what she would like and she had mentioned something to hold jewelry on. I was contemplating between a few different ideas but stopped and one that I thought she would appreciate getting because it is a piece from her childhood home. A while back my in-laws sold their home and moved. My father-in-law, who knows that I am into old pieces of salvaged wood, furniture, etc gave me a piece of molding from their home that had been removed and was no longer being used. I was saving it for myself to make a shelf or some sort of coat rack. I decided that she might appreciate it because it is from her old home.
I chipped away the old paint and left some to give it an older look after I painted it. After a few coats of primer and a cream colored paint I found some small, decorative hooks at the hardware store. I knew they didn't have to be big because she was just hanging jewelry on it. I put those on and rubbed some stain all over to make it look distressed. She was so happy and emotional about the story behind it that she said she didn't want to use it as a jewelry holder anymore because she didn't want to hide it in her bedroom. She wanted to have it downstairs. I am happy to say that it was a successful gift. Have a great Wednesday!!!

New Look For A Country Clock
Hello and good morning! Hope this post finds you well! Another weekend has come and gone so quickly.....although, it was a nice one for us. My hubby worked on a little ice rink for my son this weekend.....so now it would be nice if we could have some cold weather to freeze it over!
I found this super "country" looking wall clock at a garage sale awhile back.
I decided on the color red. I gave it a coat of primer and then sprayed on many coats of red. Red, for me, is a hard color to paint with. I feel like it always takes so many coats to achieve the desired look. After the red paint dried, I distressed it with some black paint to give it a bit more depth. It always amazes me to see how different a piece looks after it has been antiqued and/or distressed.
Here is that "country" clock now......I think it's more more modernized now.
What do you think?
Have an amazing day!
