One of a Kind Vanity

Good afternoon! It's a sunny but very cold day here in Michigan. Perfect day to be sitting by the computer blogging about a recent project while the baby is napping.
I found this beautiful vanity at a garage sale. It's pretty old, not quite sure the what era it is from, but I know that I haven't seen something quite like this. I can't say that it was super cheap but it is worth every penny of it. I knew buying it that I was taking on a big project but I couldn't wait to get started on it.
As you can see in the before pictures it was re stained this really dark, chocolate brown. I wanted to brighten it up and paint it a lighter color and emphasize all the detail on it. So I sanded it down and gave it a couple coats of primer. Then I picked out a simple cream with a more matted finish. I am not really into shiny pieces lately so this was perfect. When I completed a few coats I antiqued it with a blueish gray to really make the intricate detail stand out. I still wasn't satisfied because after being around for a few years it definitely had a few scratches and dings in it, as most things do that have been around for a while. So I took my trusty sand paper and went to town. After all the sanding I finally was satisfied and I put a couple coats of wax on it. After all the work I was happy with the finished product. Hope you have a great rest of your day!

  4. I have the entire bedroom suite of this. It was my grandparent's first furniture they purchased after marrying. I have toyed with the idea of going lighter for years. Your beautiful result may convince me the pieces need overhauling.

    1. To get the detail to show all you need to do is emphasize it with a little paint, doesn't take much time and it really shows the pretty detail off. Thanks so much for stopping by!

    1. I agree with you. The piece itself is just so beautiful dark or light. I just wanted something different than the dark stain so that I could show off all the pretty detail. Thanks for stopping by!

    1. Thanks for stopping by Linda and Jeannie!! To get the contrast and show off the detail I simply applied a different color paint then the rest of the piece, in this case I used gray, and then wiped off the excess so it would just define the lines. Thanks for joining us, we will def. check your blog out as well.
