NOT JUST FOR THE WALLS

Good Evening.  It's a Saturday evening and I decided to do a little blogging.  The evening is quiet and I'm finding some time to share one of my latest projects.  I hope everyone had a wonderful and safe Christmas.  Our Christmas was wonderful and busy.  The grand kids were fun to watch and boy oh boy were they busy.  Well on to the project.  My husband found this old jelly cabinet at a estate sale for the price of $20.00.  I just fell in love with this cabinet and thought that the possibilities were endless.  Here is the before pictures:

As you can see it was a little beat up and I had to think a little about what I was going to do.  I decided to paint the whole cabinet white, but after I did that I wasn't too happy with it.  I knew that I was going to cover the 3 shelves that went in the cabinet with vintage green wallpaper that had gold in the design.  So, what I did was wallpaper the shelves and put them back in the cabinet. The shelves looked really nice but they stood out too much.  I wanted everything to blend together.  So, out came the green paint which was brushed on and rubbed on, a combination of techniques.  After I did that I still wasn't satisfied so on went the gold paint which I brushed on in a random way.

I decided to keep the wooden knobs that came with the cabinet but I brushed on gold paint there also, but when the paint was dry I decided to add a little bling.  I glued on some earrings.  I clipped off the back of them and E6000 them onto the top of the knobs.  I also added some tassels to hang from the handles which added a little more bling.

Here is a shot of the side of the cabinet, which is a little beat up but adds to the charm of something old and vintage.

Here is a close-up of the vintage wallpaper I used. The wallpaper definitely has a pattern, but its pretty.  I kept the inside of the cabinet the white I had painted on the outside.  I thought that it would keep the inside light.  I kept all the original hardware and just brushed some gold  paint on the top of the hardware, just to add to the vintage feel.  It's a big piece so I decided to add some casters on the bottom of the cabinet, which made it really easy to move.  I really liked the way this cabinet came out.  It looks a little rustic but I think it fits the feel of this piece.  What do you think?  Until next time, Dianne.....

Paint Paint Paint

Good Morning.  It's Thursday and I'm feeling a little bit behind.  It's Christmas and everyone seems to be done shopping and organized except for me.  I guess that is normal for me because I try to do the handwork and all the little extras that I should have done in JULY, not in DECEMBER.  Well, anyways here is my fun little paint job.  Here is the before picture of my cute brass giraffes:

I decided to jazz them up with paint, paint and more paint.  What I did was brushed on them a light orange flat paint.  I than took a dry rag and wiped off the excess.  I also took a wet rag and wiped a little bit more paint off.  I wanted to accent the grooves that was on the surface of the giraffes.  When they were dry I brushed  some poly-acrylic varnish on them so the paint that I added would stay on and protected.

I think you can see the details of the giraffes a lot more than before.  What do you think?  Have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.  Until next time, Dianne........

Displaying Christmas Cards

Good afternoon! I feel like Christmas is creeping up on us and I am not really sure where the month of December has gone. It always goes so fast. This year will be the first year with a baby so it makes it even all that more exciting, even though she has no clue what is going on being only 11 months. :) It still will be fun to have Santa bring her a few presents.

So I was thinking about what I was going to blog about as another one of my Christmas cards fell off the door and to the ground. All month they have been bugging me because it looks messy how they are just scattered up on my door and the tape is just not doing it's duty. So I thought I would blog about how I resolved that problem. I could have just put them in a basket and left it on the table but I like to display them, I think they are so fun to look at throughout the season. I found some festive ribbon and stuck it to the top of the door securely so that none of these precious cards would go flying away. I was not going to tape them to it because as I said previously the tape was just not doing the trick. So I went in my sewing basket and took out my pins and started pinning them up on the ribbon. It works fabulously!!!  The cards now look more presentable and are no longer falling to my floor. Now I just need to find some more ribbon and finish the rest of the cards on another door. Hopefully this little tip will help you if you find yourself in the same predicament. Have a very Merry Christmas!!

Flea Market Transformation

Hey everyone!!  Happy Monday!!  I am just sitting here listening to some Christmas music and enjoying an afternoon cup of coffee.  Have I mentioned that I LOVE this time of year??!!  My son is enjoying a little baking soda experiment next to me that I saw on Pinterest.  He will be going to Kindergarten next year and I will miss him soooo much.....I think that is one reason I wish time would just slow down....he's getting to be such a little man.

I found this treasure at a flea market this past fall.  I think it would be cute used as fruit bowl......or maybe even filled with some Christmas ornaments?!  Here it is before I gave it a make-over.

I gave it a few coats of white paint on the outside.  After the paint dried I rubbed some gray paint on all the beautiful details.  I gave the inside of the bowl and new coat of gray paint.  Here it is after.....

I hope you have a wonderful Monday!!!

Burst of Color

Good morning, everyone.  I missed my day of blogging so I'm doing it on Friday which is my favorite day of the week.  It's the end of the work week and the next 2 days are mine to fill.  Hurray!!!! I'm like everyone else with a lot of projects to get done by Christmas.  Tis the time to be jolly!.  Anyways, here is my explanation of  my little project.  Picked up these two cute and frilly frames of a boy and girl.  Loved the frames but I wanted some more color.  Here is the before picture. Please excuse the highlight in the frame.

I really wanted to highlight the frames more than anything and I really like gold and aqua.  So, I got out my aqua paint, straight from the can and painted the whole frame.  When the paint was still wet I began to wipe the excess paint off.  I kept on wiping with clean rags, some rags wet and some dry, until I got my desired result.  Than I put poly-acrylic varnish on the frames to protect them.  Here are the after results:
So what do you think?  I think better.  Until next time, Dianne......

Updated Basket

Hello!! It's a beautiful December day here in Michigan. The sun is shining for the first time in a few days and it just feels great to have it come out and visit for awhile. It has been crazy busy around here lately. Lots of fun festivities for the season and running around trying to get last minute Christmas shopping done. I love it!

Today I am going to share with you a very SIMPLE project but at the same time it gave the item a completely different look. I have had this basket hanging around the house for awhile. I bought it this summer because I like to take photographs and I thought it might be a great prop for babies or toddlers to sit in. It had nothing wrong with it to begin with but as you can see by our blog we LOVE color. So I took out some of my trusty aqua and simple brushed the whole thing with it. I didn't worry about it covering every part of it because I like the worn look, like it has been around for a while. I decided that I liked it and wanted it to become part of my Christmas decor, so I took some red berries that I had and filled the basket with them. I just love aqua and red together. So if you have any old baskets laying around your house just coat it with a few swipes of paint and put them to use. Have a splendid Wednesday!!

For a Little Girl

Hello everyone, it's Tuesday and I'm blogging a little late but it's the holiday season and everything gets done a little bit later.  Anyways, I picked up these little and well worn baby shoes at a garage sale for practically nothing, but they were cute.  Here is the before picture:

They were a little beat up and I had the pink spray can in my hand and I thought well here goes, what can it hurt.  I sprayed them and was really happy with the result and they looked brand new.  I think they would look cute on a shelf in a little girls room or even on their feet.  I than laced them with some cute yarn that was pink and white.  Here is the end result:
What do you think?      Until next time, Dianne......

75 Cent Frame Transformed Into A Chalkboard

Good morning!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend.  I can't believe we only have two more weekends until Christmas.....December is flying by!!!  This weekend we took my son to Huckleberry Railroad which is in Flint, Michigan.  It is set-up to look like a vintage village where thousands and thousands of  Christmas lights twinkle on every building and tree. Huckleberry Railroad is so magical this time of year.....  We got to enjoy a train ride and the train was also lit up in Christmas lights!  My son absolutely loved the train ride!  It lasts for about 45 minutes and there are many Christmas light displays along the way to enjoy.  My sister and her family and Grandma and Grandpa joined us as well.  It was such an enjoyable evening.....LOVE this time of year!!

I wanted to share a quick and easy transformation.  I found this 75 cent frame at a garage sale this past summer.

I painted the glass portion of the frame first with a primer.  After that had dried, I applied several coats of chalkboard paint to it.  The frame received a coat of yummy yellow paint and then black glaze around the nooks and crannies.

What do you think?
Make it a great Monday!!!

Fit for a Princess

Good morning!! It's Friday and I couldn't be happier. I feel like this week has been really busy and I am looking forward to spending some quality time with the husband and baby. Speaking of my baby..I am going to share with you a project that I worked on just for her. I found this rocking horse at a moving sale, I guess that's no surprise because that's where I find most my treasures. It looked as if someone had painted it before and they did a great job but it wasn't in the best of shape. It looks as if the years had taken it's toll on the poor horse.

Since it was going to be for my little girl I took out some primer and pink paint and put a few coats of each on. After I was done the horse had no eyes or nose so I took some pretty, antique earrings and adhered them on where the eyes should be. I then drew little dots in the middle to make them really look like eyes. I took the white paint and antiqued all the lines of the horse so you won't miss any detail. Lastly I found some lace and put it on the seat. After all the details I think it looks perfect for my little princess.

A Little Aqua

It's Thursday and it's a good morning.  The week is just flying by and the winter weather has been pretty mild so far.  It is such a busy time of year with Christmas right around the corner and it's such a fun time of the year, but hectic.... I have a little project that was fun and one just needs a little spray paint.  Found this cute little metal retro shelf at a little shop in the town of Farwell, Michigan.  I just love to go in there and see what they have, a little retro and some new stuff.  A fun shop to shop in.  Well, anyways here is this little shelf.  It was nice the way it was, but I wanted it to look a little different.

I guess that I really wanted to paint it an aqua color and I had this Krylon can of spray paint that looked like aqua.  So I sprayed the shelf and I was pleased with the end result.  I really liked the shelf when it was on the orange colored wall.  Orange and aqua are such fun colors together and quite unexpected.

So what do you think?  Is it better or should I have left it alone?  Until next time, Dianne......

Green with Envy

Good afternoon!! I hope you all are having a fabulous Wednesday. I found this desk on craigslist quite some time ago. I was a little hesitant about working on it because it had chipped veneer on the drawers and I didn't really know what I was going to do with it. When I bought it I didn't even notice for some reason. I guess I was just in love with the shape and the hardware on it that I didn't bother looking closer. It is most definitely a learning process when finding pieces to re-do.

Anyhow my husband was on me about getting it out of the garage so I finally decided to sand it down and put a primer on it to start. Once I got that far I really got motivated and painted it white. I wasn't happy and thought it needed a different color. So then I took out this green that i bought as an "oops" paint. It was my first time opening it and I put a coat on it. I was really pleased with the color. Then I rubbed some brown stain on the corners and around the edges of the drawers to give it more of an imperfect look, since the piece is not perfect. Finally I took some sand paper and sanded the corners and edges of the piece. I thought it needed this last step because of the chipped veneer, although after the color change and detailing I don't think the missing veneer was so noticeable. Overall I was happy with the outcome and wonder why I didn't start the project earlier. That is all for today, I hope you are having a pleasant one.

This is the before picture. Even though I LOVED the color the piece wasn't in the best condition with the chipped veneer so I had to give it a new look altogether.

Here is the after. I think that the chipped veneer is not as noticeable and it looks like a brand new piece.

Here is the last picture with one of my favorite chairs that I keep on hand to take pictures with. It something that I could never part with but looks pretty nice with this desk.

Fresh Veggies

Good morning and happy Monday!  I hope you all had a restful weekend!  We took a quick four day trip to Michigan's Upper Peninsula for a family funeral.  We decided to make it an extended weekend and allow the kids to enjoy the pool.....and that they did!!!  It feels good to be home....although there are a lot of things to catch up on...laundry and etc....

I wanted to share a sign I recently made.  I've seen one similar somewhere in blogland, however, I cannot remember where.

I found a few of these basic boards for fifty cents at a garage sale.  I knew they would be perfect for signs so of course I scooped them up.  First off, I painted the board black.  After that dried, I painted a light coat of white paint onto it.  I then distressed it enough so the black paint would show through.  I then used my cricut to create a stencil and painted the words, "Fresh Veggies" onto it.  Here it is placed above my kitchen cabinets.

Have a great day!

The Power of Paint

Good morning fellow bloggers.  It's Thursday and the week seems to be going so slow when you have a day off during the week.  My school system had Monday off which I enjoyed but now the rest of the week seems to be slowing down.  Well, I found these metal floral pictures at a GARAGE SALE, of course.  I really like the scroll y  frames but they just needed to be freshened up, if you know what I mean.....or just a different look to them.   Anyways here are the before pictures:

So after I scrubbed them up I decided to rub pink paint on the metal frames to bring out the pink in the flowers.  I tried to leave as much pink paint in the grooves as I could.  After the paint dried I than brushed on a satin poly-acrylic finish to preserve the pink paint on the metal.  Here is the after picture:

I think they look more delicate and girly.  They would look great in a bedroom, bathroom or even in an entrance of a home.  What do you think?

Shabby Chic Instruments

Good evening!! I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We spent a few days out in New York with the in-laws. It's always a good time to go and visit family that you haven't seen in a while. I am going to share with you these cute metal instruments that I found. I just fell in love with them...I thought they were so neat looking. I wasn't really that happy with the color. I thought they looked dated. So I took some spray paint and then I wanted to make sure that the detail would still show so I wiped some pink paint in all the crevices. I think they would look cute in an office space or even in a little girls room. Have a great rest of your week!!

New and Improved Tray

Good afternoon!  Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend!  It always goes by in a flash.....  Our extended Thanksgiving weekend was really very nice...filled with family time and holiday events and a lot of eating!!   I was able to get a few Christmas presents on black Friday so I would consider that successful!  Our Christmas tree is up and decorated and Christmas cards are ordered!!!  Yeah....things are getting done!

I wanted to share this updated tray project with you.  I found this tray at a local consignment shop for I think five bucks.  I thought it was really neat with all the carvings on it.  Here it is before.

I gave it a few coats of green spray paint and then glazed it with black paint.  I am so pleased with how it turned out.......

Have a great day!!!

One Little Footstool

Good morning.  I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving.  My family and I had a very nice day and we are very thankful for everything we have, but I can't believe how fast Thanksgiving came up.  Actually, the year seems to be flying by.  This is not my normal day for blogging but I was a little busy cooking up a dinner for the kids, Grandma and us.   Anyways, let's start my little project which is this little darling stool bottom that had no top to it.  I loved the carving along the sides and the feet are so feminine.  The first thing I did was to paint it.  Thought that pink and white suited it well so I got started.  Painted it all in pink, than painted it white where all the carving was and wiped off the excess.  I knew that it had to have a top for it, so my husband cut out a board for the top.  I didn't want the top to set down in the stool because the sides of the stool were so beat up and you could see all the old nail and staple marks.  So, I found some foam and cut it to fit the top and sprayed the foam to the top of the board and  than covered that with batting which I sprayed glued that to the foam.  I than covered all that with a hot pink felt, which actually was stapled to the sides of the footstool.  I covered the hot pink with some burlap that came from Joann's.

Decided that it needed a little bit more, so I found some trim that closely matched the hot pink underneath the burlap.  I also found some wide lace that I thought matched the burlap look and added that to the bottom of the burlap which I stapled onto the bottom of the burlap.  I than covered all that by hot gluing the trim to the top of the lace to cover all the staples.

Here is a look at the white peeping thru on the carvings on the legs.  I decided not  to distressed this piece because I wanted the details of the carvings to show up.
Here is the finished result.  What do you think?
